Fire conditions and forecasts of serious weather forced some park closures today in Riverside County

The Fairview Fire resulted in the closure of the Lake Skinner Recreation Area because its location is under a mandatory evacuation order.

Some parks could be closed for a day or more, depending on weather conditions,  and employees are working to process reservation refunds, said Kyla Brown, general manager and director for the Riverside County Parks and Open Space District.

Tropical Storm Kay is expected to hit portions of Riverside County with heavy winds and rain that could lead to flooding.

“Our guests’ safety is always something we consider in making these decisions,” Brown said. “Closing a park is unfortunate, but protecting our guests from adverse conditions is critical.”

The following list includes the decisions for the closures and the parks impacted: 

Closed due to mandatory evacuation order due to Fairview Fire (indefinitely pending fire status):

• Lake Skinner Recreation Area

Indefinitely closed due to inclement weather conditions and Fairview Fire impacts:

• Hurkey Creek Park
• McCall Equestrian Park
• Idyllwild Park
• Idyllwild Nature Center

Closed due to inclement weather conditions and expected high wind (Sept 9 and Sept. 10, pending weather):

• Rancho Jurupa Park (Day Use Area)
• Hidden Valley Wildlife Area        
• Box Springs Reserve
• Santa Rosa Plateau & Sylvan Meadows

Closed due to inclement weather conditions and expected heavy rains (Sept. 9-11, pending weather):

• Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park
• Mayflower Park (closed through Sept. 16)
