Riverside County to Observe Homeless Person’s Memorial Day
December 16, 2024
RIVERSIDE, CA (Dec. 16, 2024) – Riverside University Health System (RUHS) and the County of Riverside Housing and Workforce Solutions (HWS) will unite with community partners to mark National Homeless Person’s Memorial Day on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at locations throughout Riverside County.
The event, known as The Longest Night, coincides with the winter solstice—the year’s longest night—and commemorates those who have experienced physical and behavioral health challenges or died while experiencing homelessness.
“We remain steadfast in our mission to uplift those facing homelessness by providing critical resources and care,” said Board of Supervisors Chair and Third District Supervisor Chuck Washington. “Events like these help us honor those we’ve lost while continuing the fight for solutions that bring hope and change.”
Community event locations include:
- Fairmount Park: 5 to 8 p.m. at 2601 Fairmount Blvd., Riverside
- Hemet Behavioral Health Clinic: 6 to 8 p.m. at 650 N. State St., Hemet
- Coachella Valley Rescue Mission: 5 to 8 p.m. at 47470 Van Buren St., Indio
Attendees will hear powerful stories of resilience and remembrance and can access essential items like blankets, hygiene kits, Narcan, snacks and information on available services.
“Ending homelessness requires more than temporary relief, it demands long-term strategies rooted in compassion and collaboration,” said Karen Spiegel, Second District Supervisor and a Board member for Riverside County Continuum of Care, which oversees community efforts to develop and implement policies, strategies, and initiatives aimed at preventing and ending homelessness.
In the last year, Riverside County has helped more than 5,711 individuals find stable housing. The county also assisted 18,339 individuals through our system of care.
“Through comprehensive initiatives such as housing support, job training, and health services, we aim to offer a pathway to stability and dignity for every individual,” said Heidi Marshall, Director, Housing and Workforce Solutions.
