Veterans Day Weekend Catfish Derby at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park

La Quinta, CA – In recognition of Veterans Day weekend, Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, in partnership with Supervisor V. Manuel Perez and the Desert Recreation District, invites the community to the annual Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park Catfish Derby on Saturday, November 9, 2024. This free event celebrates veterans and offers an opportunity for outdoor fun and camaraderie.

Gates Open: 2:00 p.m.

Derby Time: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Fishing Continues Until: 9:00 p.m.

Lake Cahuilla will be stocked with over 4,000 pounds of catfish, with support of sponsors such as YellowMart and Community Improvement Designation funding from Supervisor Perez. Prizes will be awarded for the heaviest catfish caught, with categories for both adult and children’s divisions.

“This fishing derby is a wonderful way to show our appreciation for veterans and families,” said Supervisor Perez. “With free admission to the park, free fishing and derby entry and, for veterans, free camping, and a huge stock of fish for the derby, this is a great way for the community to come together at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park in honor of our veterans and their service.” said Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez.

To further celebrate the weekend, camping specials are available at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park, offering free camping for veterans from Friday, November 8, through Sunday, November 10 with code Vet24. Additionally, all visitors can enjoy a buy-one-night, get-one-night-free camping offer during Veterans Day Weekend using code Derby24.

A state fishing license is required for participants aged 16 and over. Licenses are not sold at the park and must be purchased in advance from local retailers or online. Participants should bring their fishing gear, unopened bait, sunblock, a hat or shade, and water to stay hydrated. Chairs are optional for comfort. All fishing equipment will be inspected at the park entrance to prevent the spread of quagga mussels.
