A day to give back this International Volunteer Day, Dec. 5

Tue, 05/12/2023 - 04:00

The invaluable contributions of volunteers are illustrated by the vibrant community service of youth and residents of all ages. This year’s International Volunteer Day "The Power of Collective Action: If Everyone Did," recognizes the most valuable resource in everyone’s assets – time.

"International Volunteer Day provides us with a moment to honor the commitment and generosity of those who selflessly give their time and talents to the community,” said Board Chair Kevin Jeffries, First District Supervisor. “Not only do volunteers gain valuable life and work experience, they also contribute to the betterment of Riverside County.”

Riverside County’s Housing and Workforce Solutions (HWS) offers several opportunities to volunteer including a youth advisory program consisting of more than 100 high school aged students. Youth volunteers gain firsthand legislative experience while organizing volunteer efforts centered around clothing and backpack drives, overdose awareness and mental health services.

International Volunteer Day serves as a reminder that volunteering knows no boundaries. The County of Riverside Board of Supervisors have shown commitment to supporting the growth and development of nonprofits by funding a nonprofit roundtable to grow and sustain efforts throughout the county.

Other initiatives include the Community Action Partnership and Continuum of Care homeless prevention program. The department provides a platform for individuals to develop leadership skills, build connections, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

"Volunteering is a powerful force for good, and the enthusiasm and energy that volunteers bring to the table are truly inspiring,” said Heidi Marshall, director of Housing and Workforce Solutions. “We've witnessed a significant surge in resident involvement, demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility and a desire to actively contribute to the well-being of our community. Their passion and dedication are driving positivity and creating a lasting impact.”

The county encourages residents of all ages to explore volunteer opportunities, create positive change, and build a stronger, more connected community. To learn more about volunteering opportunities offered by Housing and Workforce Solutions, please visit rivcohhpws.org.
